Sheki is one of the oldest cities of crafts, trade and silk in Azerbaijan. Trade convoys united the centers of foreign trade through Sheki. In this respect, caravanserais were necessary in Sheki.
In Sheki the caravan-sarai were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were designed not only for sleeping caravans and travelers in the city, but at the same time caravan-sarai carried out various trade operations.
The upper caravan-serai is known in Transcaucasia with its greatness and convenience for merchants. The upper Caravan-sarai is a monument of the 18th century, was built by local architects. The building of Sheki caravanserai is beautifully built in terms of appearance and comfort.
